THE CHALLENGE
Nine
billion consumers need to have product and services,
fulfilling their basic rights, keeping in view the sustainable
consumption, without exhausting the natural resources
or irreversible damage to nature.
We
the participants of this Second Regional Conference
on "Building Partnerships for Strong Consumer Protection
in South East Asia & Pacific" call upon South
Asian & Pacific Countries in particular and international
community in general to:

Work towards consumer protection by evolving International
Law on Consumer Protection.

Develop a five years action plan on establishing
an international framework for consumer protection
on the lines of UNEP, ENESCO, UNIDO, UNDP, WHO and
other UN Bodies with linkage to sustainable consumption.

Focus
on sustainable consumer protection keeping in view
the eight basic consumer rights.

Ensure quality of life for consumers with efficient
use of natural resources especially in the interest
of the poor, rural and women consumers.

Bridge the implementation gap in consumer laws,
among developed, developing and under developed
nations.
-
Develop effective and efficient sustainable consumer
protection initiatives largely not available in
the developing world, which houses the majority
of the world consumers.

Take
practical steps toward establishing and implementing
consumer protection laws in South Asian & Pacific
Countries.
-
Launch a comprehensive research & information
program on the present state of consumer protection
in South Asia & Pacific Countries and to assist
the governments in formulation of consumer policy
and its implementation.
